Importance of Playing Your Cymbals
When I was a sophomore, I had to wear an oral medical device that temporarily prevented me from being first chair clarinet
in the high school band. Not quite knowing what to do with me, my band teacher decided I should play cymbals for the upcoming football game — the most anticipated game of the season.
I was devastated! Cymbals? Who played cymbals? Like no cool kid ever, that’s who! I wasn’t happy. Eventually, my teacher pulled me aside and reminded me that sometimes leadership meant doing the least popular job if it helped fulfill the mission of the team.
The big gameday came and as always the band marched onto the field to lead the crowd in “The Star-Spangled Banner.” As the opening bars were played, it suddently occurred to me that if I was going to play those cymbals, I might as well play them with gusto.
Dun-da-dun-dun-da-duuuun…Clash!…Da-da-dun-dun-dun-da! Clash! Dut-dun-daaaa-da-di-da! Clash!…Dun-di-da-da-dun-da-da…
With every emphasis point, I added a new twirl, flourish or creative shimmy. By the time the band played the second bar, I had flipped playing those cymbals from something dull into something legendary!
By the end of the song, I had played my cymbals so forcibly that I was drenched in sweat from the effort. My band teacher was powerless to do anything but watch in amazement as I took over a mesmerized crowd with my performance! People in the stands erupted in a raucus cheer! I was greeted with a flood of back slaps and high fives from spectators throughout the rest of the night. Very few people remember anything about that game but many still remember my cymbal performance! “Hey, remember that night you played cymbals at the football game” still remains a regular conversation starter even all these decades later!
Here’s what that experience taught me: Life will often require us to do things we really don’t want to do. But there’s no rule that says we can’t take what might seem like a negative experience and find a way to make it work in a favorable, fun and memorable way.
I call it “playing my cymbals” and it’s a philosophy I now use as a guiding principle in both my personal and professional life. It’s what has allowed me to take one of the lowest points in my professional life (being fired from a job I loved) and turn it into this promising new business known as Soul Popped Gourmet Popcorn. Believe me, if I didn’t know how to play my cymbals, this company would not exist!
When I’d nearly lost everything, it’s because I remembered how to play my cymbals that I was able to regroup and retool to create some of the most unique and best-tasting popcorn ever made. It’s why in just a few short months, Soul Popped has attracted a growing legion of followers I affectionately call “Soul Poppers.” And, it’s the reason I’m committed to growing Soul Popped into the #1 designer popcorn maker in the world!

In conclusion, thank you to everyone who has supported me and this brand thus far.
